Genealogy Magazines Worth the Subscription Price? You Decide
Call us old fashioned, but many genealogists enjoy sitting down with a magazine devoted to our lifelong hobby. Sure we love the internet for research, and use it more and more everyday, but there’s something about sitting in your favorite chair with a cup of coffee and devouring every page, that makes a genealogy magazine so attractive.
Lucky for all of us, there are several to choose from that come out frequently, and are available on the newsstand or by subscription. All of these publications have been around for a few years or more, and each have websites that make some of the content available for free, a bonus for those among us who prefer to do all of our reading via the web.
Since all of them have websites, they’re also quite easy to access online for browsing an issue before you subscribe, and you can fill out subscription forms and pay for a subscription online, if you prefer. Some of them will even send you a trial issue to enjoy in the comfort of your home before committing to buy a subscription.
We’ve managed to find at least six genealogy magazines with an online presence, and invite our readers to share information about any others we’ve yet to discover. Feel free also to tell us what you like or don’t like about any of the magazines mentioned here.
The oldest of the group, Everton’s Genealogical Helper, is making a comeback after nearly disappearing from the genealogical landscape a few years ago. Each issue is more than 200 pages, and features columns on a variety of genealogical topics, complete with the queries and surname index sections that have been its mainstay. The cost is $27 per year for 6 issues.
Family Tree Magazine features columns like “Everything’s Relative” and “Preserving Memories”. The website offers a preview of each issue’s contents. This month’s highlight, an article on the 101 Best Web Sites for tracing your roots.
The cost is $24 for 6 issues, and a FREE TRIAL is available.
Ancestry Magazine is part of The Generations Network that also owns Ancestry.com, and other large genealogy database-rich websites. The website offers an archive of articles dating back to 1994. Preview this month’s issue.
